George Strock's Buna War Dead Photo in LIFE, September 20, 1943
George Strock photographed three dead American soldiers on the beach at Buna, in what is now Papua New Guinea, during the Buna-Gona campaign around the end of 1942 or beginning of 1943. The photograph shows the soldiers lying face down on wet sand. The nearest body is partly covered by sand beside a helmet and pack, while another lies near the waterline. A wrecked landing boat is half-submerged in the surf, with palms visible beyond the beach. LIFE published the photograph as a full-page image on September 20, 1943, after pressing the federal government for permission to show American war dead. Wartime censorship had barred publication of photographs depicting dead U.S. servicemen. Office of War Information Director Elmer Davis cleared the image with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's backing. LIFE accompanied it with an editorial explaining why the public should see the human cost of the war. ·
