Elizabeth Eckford at Little Rock Central High, September 4, 1957
Elizabeth Eckford, 15, was blocked from entering Little Rock Central High School on September 4, 1957, the scheduled first day of integrated classes. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had ordered the Arkansas National Guard to prevent Eckford and the other members of the Little Rock Nine from entering the school. Eckford arrived separately from the other students and walked away alone as a white mob followed her. Photographer Will Counts captured Eckford wearing sunglasses and carrying a notebook as she walked past the school. Hazel Bryan, also 15, was photographed shouting directly behind her, while helmeted National Guard troops were visible nearby. The Arkansas Democrat published the photograph on its front page. President Dwight D. Eisenhower later sent troops from the 101st Airborne Division to enforce the students' admission. Counts photographed Eckford and Bryan together at Central High again in 1997.
