Edward S. Curtis Native American Photographs, US, c. 1900-1927
Edward S. Curtis photographed Native American people and communities across the Plains, Plateau and Southwest during fieldwork conducted from about 1900 to 1927. The 28 photographs include close portraits, mounted riders, groups of men, camps, lodges, tipis reflected in a pond and a fisherman standing on a rock above a river. One image is Curtis's 1905 photograph An Oasis in the Bad Lands, showing Oglala Lakota sub-chief Red Hawk on horseback in the South Dakota Badlands. Another is a 1907 portrait of Hollow Horn Bear, a Brulé Lakota leader, later published in the third volume of Curtis's The North American Indian. Clothing and regalia represented in the wider collection are associated with several Native American peoples, including Lakota, Apsáalooke, Blackfeet, Hopi, Diné, Apache and Nez Perce communities.
