Ebensee Concentration Camp in Austria: Liberation, May 6, 1945
U.S. troops liberated the Ebensee concentration camp in Upper Austria on May 6, 1945. The camp had operated since November 1943 as a subcamp of Mauthausen, using prisoners as forced labor to excavate underground tunnels intended for armament production. Photographs taken in May 1945 show survivors gathered in the roll-call area, emaciated prisoners in and around the infirmary barracks, the crematorium oven and wagons carrying corpses. Austrian civilians were made to exhume, transport and bury the dead after liberation. Other photographs show memorial wreaths at mass graves, a U.S. military funeral for a Soviet colonel who had been imprisoned at Ebensee, Capt. Al Winters beside a corpse wagon and aerial reconnaissance views of the camp and surrounding Alpine terrain. |

What, no more photos? Couldn't you get more? lol I'm just kidding. Great collection. I hate to say it because some here are sensitive, but a couple of them are kind of funny.
