Dorothy Counts Photo: Jeered at Harding High in Charlotte, September 4, 1957
Fifteen-year-old Dorothy Counts arrived at Harry P. Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 4, 1957, as one of the first Black students to attend the newly desegregated school. White students jeered her as she walked toward the building on her first day. Photographer Douglas Martin captured Counts walking calmly in a checked dress and long white neck bow while grinning white teenage boys followed behind her, some pointing or raising a hand. A white youth walked to her left, and an adult man walked beside her. Martin's image was named the 1957 World Press Photo of the Year. Counts faced continued harassment at the school, and her father withdrew her after four days. She later became known as Dorothy Counts-Scoggins.
