Djakovo Internment Camp for Women and Children in Croatia, 1941-1942

The Đakovo internment camp operated in eastern Croatia from December 2, 1941, to July 7, 1942, under the Ustaša regime of the Independent State of Croatia. About 1,800 Jewish women and children from Bosnia and approximately 50 Serb women arrived in the first transports. Another 1,161 women were transferred from Stara Gradiška on February 24, 1942, and later arrivals brought the camp population to a peak of about 3,000. Roughly 3,800 people passed through the camp.

The prisoners were confined in an abandoned flour mill. Hunger and an epidemic killed hundreds. Some children were rescued, but the camp was emptied through transports to Jasenovac between June 15 and July 7, 1942. Reported figures for those transferred range from 2,400 to 3,200, and they were killed at Gradina. One photograph shows the former mill building and its timber lattice tower. Another shows rows of grave markers in the cemetery for camp victims, including a marker bearing the name Levi Emil.
