D-Day and Normandy Campaign: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword, 1944
Allied forces landed on the Normandy coast of France on June 6, 1944, opening a new front against German forces in Western Europe. Operation Neptune, the assault phase of Operation Overlord, combined airborne landings with amphibious attacks at Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. The recorded scenes extend from an air raid on Pointe du Hoc on May 22 through the landings and later stages of the Normandy campaign. They include troops and landing craft approaching the beaches, gliders over Utah, the relief of Pointe du Hoc, construction of a blockship breakwater, fighting around Cherbourg, Saint-Lô and Barenton, and the recovery of casualties. Robert F. Sargent's "Into the Jaws of Death," showing U.S. troops leaving a Coast Guard landing craft at Omaha Beach, is among the best-known images. Also covered here: Photographic Time Line ![]() |
