Bernie Boston's Flower Power Photograph: Pentagon, October 21, 1967
Photographer Bernie Boston took the Flower Power photograph at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, on October 21, 1967, during the March on the Pentagon against the Vietnam War. The black-and-white image shows a young protester holding a bunch of carnations as he places a stem into the rifle barrel of a military police officer. Another flower is already lodged in a nearby barrel. Helmeted military police stand in a line with rifles and fixed bayonets facing a crowd of demonstrators. Boston made the photograph for his newspaper, which published it the next day on page 10 rather than the front page. The image became one of the best-known photographs of the anti-war movement and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in photography.

The guy putting the flowers in the gun is George Edgerly Harris III, Jr (AKA Hibiscus). He was an interesting character in his later years... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_(entertainer) |
