American Life in Shorpy Photographs, c.1895-1922
Thirty-two photographs document American life from about 1895 through 1922, primarily in New York, New Jersey, the Great Lakes region and along the East Coast. The collection includes city streets, bridges, amusement attractions, ships, automobiles, aircraft and working children. One photograph shows Times Square around 1908, with the Times Building and Hotel Astor visible. Another records the White Star liner Olympic arriving in New York on its maiden voyage on June 21, 1911, guided by tugboats. Other scenes include the Brooklyn Bridge, the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, pony riders at a Coney Island attraction, a racing cutter, a ship launch, a Ford Model T delivery truck, a biplane carrying a woman passenger, an excursion steamer passing a bascule bridge and a group of child newsies gathered outdoors in winter.
