Afghan Girl Steve McCurry Portrait: Sharbat Gula in Pakistan, 1984
American photojournalist Steve McCurry photographed Sharbat Gula at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan, in 1984. Gula, a Pashtun refugee from the Soviet-Afghan War, was about 12 and attending an informal school in the camp. McCurry photographed her on Kodachrome 64 as she looked directly into the camera while wearing a torn red shawl. The portrait appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic and became the magazine's best-known image. McCurry did not record her name, and attempts to locate her during the 1990s failed. A National Geographic team found her in Afghanistan in January 2002. Iris recognition confirmed her identity, and she was photographed again as an adult for an April 2002 cover story. A paired image places that adult portrait beside the original 1984 photograph. Gula said she had never seen the famous portrait before the reunion. Pakistan arrested her in October 2016 over forged identity papers and deported her to Afghanistan the following month. Italy evacuated her to Rome after the Taliban takeover in 2021. ·

That is an awesome pic, i remember seeing it on the cover and thinking that she looks like she looks like she wants to kill the photographer. Almost has a "how dare you!! " kind of look to her eyes.

They found her again not too long ago, still the same eyes... but transplanted into Ron Jeremy. Seriously, she was still alive a few years ago, they found her and her picture was on the cover of National Geographic again. Had a whole story about her and everything. |
