Abandoned Soviet Missile Silo Complex in Kazakhstan, 2008
An abandoned Soviet missile silo complex in Kazakhstan was photographed in 2008. The installation included open launch shafts, silo headworks with heavy steel covers mounted on rails, earth-covered bunkers, blast doors, winch rooms and cable trays. Some corridors and shafts had flooded, and equipment had been removed from parts of the complex. Russian signs marked an elevator with a 350-kilogram or three-person capacity, warned personnel to stay clear while machinery was operating and pointed toward one of the shafts. The complex was built for silo-launched missiles, not as a surface pad for rockets sent into orbit. |
