George Wesley Huguely V, 22, was convicted of second-degree murder on February 22, 2012, in the death of Yeardley Reynolds Love, 22, a University of Virginia lacrosse player and his former girlfriend. He was sentenced on August 30, 2012, to 23 years in prison and three years' probation.

Love was found unresponsive at about 2:15 a.m. on May 3, 2010, at her apartment at 222 14th Street in Charlottesville and was pronounced dead. The cause was blunt-force trauma. Huguely, also a UVA lacrosse player, was arrested on May 4, 2010, and initially charged with first-degree murder.

In his police interview after the arrest, Huguely waived his rights and described the assault. He said he had kicked open Love's locked bedroom door, shaken her so that her head repeatedly hit the wall, and that he may have grabbed her neck. When detectives told him Love was dead, he reacted in disbelief and said, "Kill me."

The trial opened on February 6, 2012. The jury began deliberating on February 22 and returned the second-degree murder verdict and a grand larceny conviction while acquitting him of the remaining counts.

The Court of Appeals of Virginia granted an appeal on April 23, 2013, heard argument on December 11, 2013, and affirmed the conviction on March 4, 2014. The Virginia Supreme Court declined the case in November 2014.

On May 2, 2022, a civil jury awarded Love's family $15 million in a wrongful-death suit.
