Timothy Dean Questioned in Sodus Killings

Former Sunray, Texas, police chief Timothy Dean was convicted of all charges and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the October 22, 2018, killings of Joshua Niles and Amber Washburn in Sodus, New York.

Dean, 32 at the time of his arrest, was married to Charlene Childers, the former partner of Niles, 28, of Sodus in Wayne County. Childers and Niles had two children together, and Niles had recently been granted custody of them. Niles lived with his fiancee, Washburn, 24.

Niles and Washburn were shot and killed in the driveway of their home on Carlton Street in the Village of Sodus. Prosecutors said Niles was shot ten times. Washburn was shot once in the head as she arrived home and died at the scene. Prosecutors said the custody dispute over the two children was the motive.

Wayne County Sheriff's investigators focused on the custody dispute and a rental vehicle driven from Texas to New York. Dean was arrested in Moore County, Texas, and held on a $1 million bond before being extradited from the Moore County jail to Wayne County in November 2018. Childers was arrested in Wayne County and held as a fugitive from justice on separate Texas charges. Bron Bohlar, a former Sunray police officer, was charged with conspiracy over the rental car.

During the recorded interview, New York investigators tell Dean they can place him in Sodus that morning. They show him a phone extraction report containing messages between Childers and another person, question him about his whereabouts on October 22, and refer to rental cars, financial records and his phone. They tell him they have enough evidence to prove he did it. Dean is questioned as a suspect and does not admit to the shootings in the recording. The date and place of the interview are not stated in any source found.

A Wayne County grand jury indicted Dean on one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of conspiracy. He pleaded not guilty. Childers testified for the prosecution under a plea agreement, and the jury found Dean guilty on all counts on May 24, 2019. Wayne County Judge Daniel Barrett imposed the life sentence on August 2, 2019.

Bohlar received one to three years in prison for conspiracy. Childers pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Dean's attorney said he would appeal. No appellate ruling has been publicly reported.

The video is an interview-room recording lasting about 43 minutes. It presents the police interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.

Re: Timothy Dean Questioned in Sodus Killings

Charlene Childers was sentenced in June 2019 to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in the October 22, 2018 shootings of Joshua Niles and Amber Washburn in Sodus, New York.

Childers is the wife of Timothy Dean and the former partner of Niles, with whom she had two children. The recording is her second police interview in the double homicide. She was questioned with her attorney present by Wayne County investigators, who told her they were preparing for trial and that nothing was promised. The date of the recording was not stated.

Childers discussed how a rental car was obtained through Bron Bohlar and why Dean's name was kept off it. A gun from the Sunray police was also mentioned. Childers testified against Dean.

In 2026, Childers applied to be resentenced under New York's Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. A hearing was held in Wayne County Court on July 24, 2026, testimony was set to continue on October 14, 2026, and no ruling had been reported.

The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 65 minutes. It presents the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
