Michael Conrad, 20, died after Stuart Beck shot him at close range in a Clearwater apartment early July 6, 2022, and Beck was charged with first-degree murder in a case that remained pending before a Pinellas County jury as of the most recent reports in mid-July 2026.

Beck, then about 21 and later reported as 24 to 25, and Conrad were both romantically involved with Kaitlyn Nash-Koehler. Beck began dating her in January 2021 and moved into her Bay Cove Apartments unit in February 2021, but moved out in March 2022 after their relationship deteriorated. His name remained on the lease, and Nash-Koehler later described problems with his behavior when drinking. She began dating Conrad a few weeks later but still occasionally spent time with Beck, including a sleepover around July 4, 2022, after which she gave him a key to lock up. Prosecutors described jealousy as the motive, while a judge called it a "raging fit of jealousy" and anger after Beck recognized Conrad's truck.

Nash-Koehler and Conrad had been drinking and smoking marijuana before going to bed around midnight at her unit at Bay Cove Apartments, 19135 U.S. Highway 19 North. Conrad was present but did not live there. Nash-Koehler put her phone on "do not disturb." Beck arrived by rideshare just after 2 a.m., texted and called her, and was told to leave. After recognizing Conrad's truck, he kicked in or broke down the front door and entered the bedroom.

Nash-Koehler, who was in her underwear, stood between the men as Beck forced his way in. Conrad exclaimed in surprise, and Beck shot him with the gun pressed against his body, muffling the sound. Conrad was pronounced dead at Morton Plant Hospital. Beck fled on foot and later took another rideshare. He told investigators he had hidden the gun in a purse deep in the woods.

Clearwater Police quickly identified Beck as the suspect. He was arrested in Pasco County on the evening of July 7, 2022. Evidence included rideshare records showing travel to the apartments around 2 a.m. and a later departure, Nash-Koehler's account, the close-range shot, and neighbors' reports of bangs, slams and a scream. Beck told detectives he went there with a backpack containing a pistol after recognizing the truck. He claimed concern about trafficking and risk to Nash-Koehler, then said, "I made a mistake… I didn't want to kill anybody."

Investigators and the court found that Beck had no legal right to force entry that night after moving out and being told to leave, despite his name remaining on the lease and his occasional prior visits. Conrad's grandmother, Peggy Camarillo, was later charged with witness tampering over social-media threats against a person present at the complex.

Beck has remained in custody since shortly after his 2022 arrest. In July 2025, Pinellas County Judge Philippe Matthey rejected his Stand Your Ground immunity claim, ruling after a hearing that Beck had no right to be in the apartment and that his use of force was not reasonable. The judge found that Beck intended to confront Conrad amid jealousy. Opening statements in the first-degree murder trial began around mid-July 2026. Prosecutors said the killing was "fueled by jealousy," and Beck faced a mandatory life sentence if convicted as charged. No verdict or sentencing had been publicly reported in the most recent available coverage.
