Steven Bryce Wheeler Questioned in Wife's Death
Steven Bryce Wheeler was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Jordan Wheeler, at their former marital home in Clinton Township, Macomb County, Michigan. After a six-day trial, a jury found Wheeler guilty as charged on Thursday, January 23, 2025, of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm. Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Julie Gatti in Mount Clemens sentenced him on February 26, 2025, adding two years for felony firearm, to be served first. Assistant Prosecutors Kumar Palepu and Kelsey Heath tried the case for the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Wheeler was 31 when he was convicted and sentenced. Wheeler lived in Clinton Township. Jordan was 33, and the couple had three young children. They were divorcing, and Jordan had moved in with her sister. The house on Woodward Street, near 15 Mile Road and Beaconsfield Street in Clinton Township, was their former marital home. During his police interview, Wheeler said they had been married nine and a half years and that he was going through a divorce. At about 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2023, Jordan was at the house when the couple argued. Prosecutors said she called 911 to report that her husband was assaulting her. While she was still on the phone, he shot her five times in the head with a .45 caliber handgun. She died at the scene. Two of their three children were at the house that night. At trial, their 9-year-old son testified that he and his younger brother fled the house only seconds before their father shot their mother. Clinton Township police responded to a domestic violence call, recovered a weapon at the scene and took Wheeler into custody. He was 30 when he was charged on October 21, 2023, with first-degree murder and felony firearm and held without bond. On April 25, 2024, Sterling Heights District Court Judge Stephen Sierawski bound him over for trial in Macomb County Circuit Court. Police questioned Wheeler on October 20, 2023, beginning at about 3 a.m., some six hours after the shooting, and again that afternoon in a different interview room. At the start of the first session, a detective asked whether he had been drinking. Wheeler said he might be intoxicated and was still in shock. He was read his rights and asked when he would get a court-appointed lawyer. Told one would be assigned at arraignment, he agreed to talk. A detective told Wheeler police had the 911 call and could hear the couple arguing. Near the end of the questioning, detectives pressed him on how an argument turned into a shooting. He said he did not remember parts of it and asked whether they could be done.
