Steven Douglas Bails Jr., then 45, was convicted of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide in the killing of his ex-girlfriend, Kayla Marie Sedoskey, 23, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Sedoskey, of Monroe, Michigan, was the mother of a 3-year-old son. Prosecutors identified Bails, of Frenchtown Township, as the leader of a six-person plot whose members had roommate and social ties. Around the same period, Bails married Narena Bails. Officials said the group conspired after "multiple disagreements" with Sedoskey. The exact motive was never fully settled in public statements, though possibilities included revenge or a "wedding present" tied to the Bailses' marriage.

Between about 10 p.m. February 15 and 12:30 a.m. February 16, 2023, Brin Smith lured Sedoskey to the abandoned Boysville facility. Police said Steven Bails, Kaylyn Ramsey and Sierra Bemis were waiting when she arrived. Sedoskey was shot three times, but investigators have not publicly confirmed a single shooter.

The next day, Bails returned with Smith, Ramsey and Bemis to hide Sedoskey's body and cover it with fragrance. The body was found March 2, 2023. Steven and Narena Bails fled after the discovery and were arrested in North Carolina following a standoff with U.S. Marshals.

Co-defendants Narena Bails, Sierra Bemis and Alexander Feko later testified against Bails. His March 2024 jury trial included more than 20 witnesses and about 60 exhibits. He did not testify, and the defense called no witnesses.

The jury convicted him on both counts on March 21-22, 2024, after about 90 minutes of deliberations. On May 23, 2024, Judge Daniel S. White sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole on first-degree murder and life with the possibility of parole on the conspiracy count. He is incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Brin David Westley Smith was sentenced to 40 to 60 years after pleading no contest to second-degree murder for luring Kayla Sedoskey, 23, of Monroe, Michigan, to the site where she was killed in February 2023.

The group devised a plan for Smith to pretend romantic interest, or "catfish" Sedoskey through Facebook, arrange a date and lure her to the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Facility, a former detention center in Frenchtown Township, Monroe County, Michigan. The plan was carried out between approximately 10 p.m. February 15 and 12:30 a.m. February 16, 2023.

Smith picked up Sedoskey and drove her to the facility under the guise of spending time alone. Steven Bails waited there with Ramsey and Bemis, and the group was reportedly dressed in dark clothing. Narena Bails remained at the shared apartment, monitoring a police scanner so she could alert the others if needed. Sedoskey was attacked and shot three times with a suspected .22-caliber handgun, including once at close range in the top of the head. Her body was later wrapped in a tarp.

The next day, some members of the group returned to hide or cover the body and applied fragrances to mask the odor. Feko disposed of the firearm. Some defendants, including the Bailses and Smith, later fled Michigan.

High school students exploring the abandoned facility found Sedoskey's body on March 2, 2023. She was identified through fingerprints, and her death was ruled a homicide. The Michigan State Police led a year-long investigation with help from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and out-of-state agencies, including U.S. Marshals for arrests. The Bailses and Smith were arrested in North Carolina after a standoff, while others remained local. Co-defendants later testified against Steven Bails.

Evidence included Facebook messages used in the lure, texts sent around the time of the killing, witness accounts from co-defendants and physical evidence at the scene, including the body's condition, the tarp and the gunshot wounds. Investigators also had a recorded video call in which Ramsey discussed involvement, a notebook with wedding-related notes found during a search, and evidence of the police scanner monitoring role. The exact shooter was not definitively established in public reports. Testimony and statements pointed to involvement by those present, with some accounts implicating Ramsey. Descriptions of the motive varied, and some defendants initially denied or minimized their roles before plea deals and testimony.

Smith pleaded no contest on April 2, 2024, with the factual basis that he lured Sedoskey to the site. He was sentenced on May 30, 2024.

Sierra Nicole Bemis, one of six people charged in the February 2023 killing of Kayla Sedoskey, 23, of Monroe, Michigan, was sentenced to 18 years, 9 months to 30 years in prison after pleading no contest / guilty to second-degree homicide.
