Scott Joseph Thompson was convicted in July 2010 of second degree murder by strangulation in the death of Cheryl Renee Cain in Pensacola, Florida, and was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole. An Escambia County jury deliberated about an hour and twenty minutes before returning the verdict, and Circuit Judge Ronald Swanson imposed the sentence.

Cain, 29, was last in contact with her family at about 8 p.m. on March 23, 2009, when she called to say she would be home soon. She did not arrive. Her body was found on the afternoon of March 25, 2009, in a dumpster behind a closed Shell station on Highway 29 at Burgess Road in Pensacola. She had been strangled. Her car was later found at a Pensacola motel. A witness testified that Cain and Thompson had argued over money on the last day she was seen alive.

Cain lived in Cantonment, Florida, an unincorporated community north of Pensacola in Escambia County. She worked at a Pensacola veterinarian's office, had graduated from Tate High School and was known locally through rodeo. Her father, Danny Cain, lived in Cantonment. Thompson, also 29, lived in Jay, Florida, in neighboring Santa Rosa County. He was not Cain's partner but was the roommate of a former boyfriend of hers. He was on probation for 2007 narcotics offenses.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office investigated. Investigators reviewed surveillance video from a bus station near the dumpster and examined phone records connecting Thompson to Cain. Cain's wallet was found under Thompson's bed at the house in Jay. DNA was recovered from the dumpster and from inside Cain's car, and Thompson's DNA was identified in the vehicle. That DNA was the basis for the murder charge.

Sheriff's investigators interviewed Thompson during the investigation. No confession by Thompson was reported at any point. He was arrested on a murder charge on June 9, 2009, while already in custody on a probation violation. He was held without bond at the Escambia County Jail and made his first appearance by video from the jail on June 11, 2009.

Thompson was charged with second degree murder. He did not plead guilty, and the case went to trial. He appealed his conviction, arguing that the trial evidence was insufficient. Florida's First District Court of Appeal rejected the argument and affirmed the conviction and life sentence in February 2012.

Thompson remained in Florida Department of Corrections custody, first at Graceville Correctional Facility and later at Blackwater Correctional Facility. He died there on April 27, 2023, at age 42.
