Robert J. Gullia Questioned in His Father's Death

Robert J. Gullia was sentenced to 20 to 25.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and gross abuse of a corpse in the death of his father, Theodore A. Gullia, in Solon, Ohio.

Judge Michael P. Shaughnessy of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas imposed the sentence. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction record confirms the three offenses, consecutive manslaughter and assault terms, an aggregate sentence of 20 to 25.5 years and an effective sentence date of November 12, 2024. The guilty plea was reported on November 12, 2024, but the date of the plea itself was not stated. No appeal has been reported.

Robert Gullia was 32 when he was arrested in November 2023. He lived with his father, 65, in the family home on Sherwood Drive in Solon, a Cleveland suburb. At about 10:50 a.m. on November 22, 2023, the day before Thanksgiving, his wife called 911 after finding him and said he was not breathing. Officers found him dead with severe visible injuries to his head and other areas.

Police said Robert Gullia had spent the previous night alone in the house with his father and attacked him with an object. The object was not identified. Officers took him into custody at the scene and held him at the Solon jail. The Solon Police Department, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took part in the investigation.

He was first charged with aggravated murder. On December 4, 2023, it was reported that a Cuyahoga County grand jury had indicted him on aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and offenses against a human corpse.

In the opening portion of the recording, officers order him and another man to the ground and handcuff both while sorting out what happened. Gullia tells them his father is dead, that he heard a scuffle in the middle of the night and that he thinks someone broke in. When an officer points out that the body has clearly been moved, he denies moving it and suggests his mother may have gone up there.

Officers then conduct a longer recorded interview after advising Gullia of his rights. Near the end, he is told he will remain at the Solon location until at least Monday and can ask the jailer to contact the detective if he has more to say. The date of the longer interview and what he said in it were not reported.
