Randall D. Campbell Questioned in Crystal Garney Case
Randall D. Campbell pleaded guilty to gross abuse of a corpse after being charged in connection with the disposal of Crystal Garney's body in Ashtabula County, Ohio, but he was never charged with her shooting or killing. Garney, 46, lived on East 14th Street in Ashtabula. Daniel A. Taylor lived at her home and was described by the Ohio Eleventh District Court of Appeals as her roommate. Heather A. Tinker was Taylor's girlfriend. Campbell, of Ashtabula, was 47 when the case was tried in August 2022. In the recorded interview, he refers to Garney as "Auntie." Garney was last seen at home on September 8, 2021, and was reported missing on September 10. A gunshot wound was suspected as the cause of death. According to the prosecutor, Taylor killed Garney on September 8. Testimony at Tinker's trial, as summarized by the appeals court, said Garney's body was wrapped in plastic, placed in the back of a truck, left in a wooded area and covered with pallets. It was found on September 13 near a railroad right-of-way between Route 167 and March Road in Jefferson Township. Prosecutors said Tinker and Campbell helped Taylor dispose of the body. Taylor, Tinker and Campbell were arrested and arraigned on September 13 and 14, 2021. Taylor was charged with murder, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. Campbell and Tinker were each charged with tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. Campbell's case was State v. Randall D. Campbell, 21 CR 00394. During the September 13 interview, Campbell describes visits to Garney's home and says he last saw Taylor days earlier. Detectives press him to restart his account and explain what he remembers about a drive along a railroad track toward a pond. Taylor pleaded guilty on August 17, 2022, to murder, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse. Under a stipulated plea agreement, he was sentenced to 15 years to life plus three years on a firearm specification, for a total of 18 years to life. Campbell pleaded guilty to one count of gross abuse of a corpse, a fifth-degree felony, with a stipulated recommendation of 12 months in prison conditioned on truthful testimony against Tinker. He testified at her trial. A report said Campbell was due to be sentenced on August 29, 2022, but the prosecutor's release that day said sentencing would be held later. No sentence actually imposed on Campbell has been publicly reported. He was convicted only of gross abuse of a corpse, not of the killing. A jury found Tinker guilty on August 25, 2022, of tampering with evidence, obstructing justice and gross abuse of a corpse. She was sentenced on October 12, 2022, to three consecutive terms totaling seven years. The appeals court vacated the sentence on September 11, 2023, because required findings for consecutive terms had not been made. She received the same seven-year sentence on October 18, 2023, and it was affirmed on May 6, 2024. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 61 minutes. It contains the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
