Joseph Ferlazzo was sentenced in April 2025 to 42 and a half years to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Emily Ferlazzo, 22, in Bolton, Vermont, in October 2021.

Emily Ferlazzo was shot twice, stabbed and dismembered during a trip in the couple's camper van. A jury deliberated for less than two hours in December 2024 before convicting Ferlazzo of first-degree murder after five days of testimony, rejecting his claim that he acted in self-defense.

Prosecutors said Ferlazzo shot his wife after she told him she no longer wanted to be with him. He was arrested four days after the killing when a state trooper recognized him at a convenience store in St. Albans, Vermont.

Ferlazzo, who was from New Hampshire, was taken to the Vermont State Police barracks in St. Albans. During a recorded interview, detectives walked him through the days around the killing, including his account of having breakfast with his sister the following morning, before confronting him with what they knew. He testified at trial that he had acted in self-defense.

At sentencing, the judge said Emily Ferlazzo had a voice that deserved to be heard. Prosecutors had asked for at least 50 years, while the defense had sought 15.
