Matthew Briganti Questioned in His Father's Death

Matthew Briganti was sentenced to 30 years in Florida state prison on March 15, 2024, after entering a plea to second-degree murder in his 68-year-old father's death in Manatee County.

Briganti was 49 years old in July 2021 and lived with his father in a mobile home at the Gar Fair Mobile Home Park, in the 3100 block of 9th Street West in Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida. The sheriff's office withheld the father's name under Marsy's Law. Surveillance video showed his father last entering the residence at about 1:45 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021. Prosecutors later said Briganti was the only person seen entering or leaving the home between then and law enforcement's arrival about 30 hours later.

At about 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, Briganti called 911 and said his father may have fallen and that the body was blocking the front door. Deputies, fire rescue and EMS found that the father had been dead for hours, with obvious head trauma. An autopsy found the cause of death was blunt impact head injuries and that he had been intentionally struck in the head at least two times with a heavy object. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Florida Department of Corrections records give the offense date as July 30, 2021.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office investigated the death as a homicide. According to the probable cause affidavit, Briganti said he came home around 6 a.m. on the day of the 911 call, went to bed without seeing his father and woke around 4 p.m. He said he then found his father slumped in a seated position with his back against the door. The sheriff's office said his statements were inconsistent with the scene evidence. A blood spatter expert it retained found that the blood patterns matched the medical examiner's opinion that the father was struck at least twice in the head.

In interviews, Briganti kept telling detectives his father must have fallen. During the long detective interview, he maintains that account and says other people had threatened him and his father. Near the end, detectives confront him with the medical examiner's finding of at least two blows to the head. He answers that he did not murder his father, and detectives get out handcuffs. On August 5, 2021, the sheriff's office said a suspect had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The charge carried a maximum sentence of life in prison. Briganti entered his plea in Manatee County on Friday, March 15, 2024, and was sentenced the same day. Published accounts of the hearing differ on whether the plea was guilty or no contest. Assistant State Attorney Charlie Lawrence said: "This was a brutal murder that could only stem from evil and hatred." He added: "The defendant's futile attempt to make his father's murder appear as an accident served as further proof of his guilt."

Florida Department of Corrections records, current as of October 25, 2026, list Briganti as incarcerated at Jefferson Correctional Institution. He was received on April 30, 2024, and is serving 30 years for second-degree murder in Manatee County case 2102218. His projected release date is October 9, 2050, which the department says is subject to change.
