A Lubbock County grand jury indicted Shovantae Johnson, 19 at the time, on a first-degree felony murder charge after Demodrick Williams, 22, was fatally shot outside a South Lubbock apartment complex on September 5, 2014.

Williams and Johnson knew each other and had a prior dispute over Williams' accusation that Johnson stole his television. Johnson's name was also reported as Shovantae/Shovantae Trevone Johnson.

The shooting occurred around 8:45 to 8:47 p.m. that Friday in the parking lot of the Falcon Cove Apartments/Townhomes, in the 6500, 6517 or 6541 Temple Avenue area. Williams was in or near a black 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse with companions when a several-minute argument unfolded. Johnson had a revolver described as having a reddish-brown handle. Witnesses reported hearing two to six shots.

Williams was struck in the left wrist, leaving bone visible, and in the abdomen or waist area. A bullet damaged the vehicle's back window. Johnson fled on foot, heading north through the complex, and was last seen wearing gray sweatpants and black shoes. Williams was found on the ground and identified Johnson as the shooter while receiving aid, linking the shooting to the stolen television accusation. He was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center and died hours later on the operating table after surgery.

Investigators also relied on eyewitness accounts of the argument and of Johnson firing multiple shots before fleeing. Physical evidence included blood in or on the Mitsubishi's front passenger area and door and on nearby asphalt, along with the damaged rear window. Companions who had been with Williams shortly before the shooting gave statements, although some people in the crowd initially reported hearing shots without seeing the shooting. No extensive premeditation, body concealment, scene staging or other post-crime tampering beyond the immediate flight was reported.

Johnson was identified quickly through Williams' statements and eyewitnesses. He was arrested or surrendered around Sunday, September 7, 2014, and was held at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $1 million bond. During an interrogation around September 10, investigators noted inconsistencies between his account and other evidence, including later follow-up that did not match his statements. Johnson was also facing a separate pending burglary of a habitation charge from an earlier incident.

The grand jury indictment was reported around September 23 or 24, 2014, and Johnson remained jailed on the $1 million bond.
