Jodi Ann Arias, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013, for killing her former boyfriend, Travis Victor Alexander, 30, at his home in Mesa, Arizona, on June 4, 2008. Alexander was found in his shower five days later with 27 stab wounds, a slit throat and a gunshot wound to the head.

When detectives first questioned Arias, she said she had not been in Mesa on June 4 and had last seen Alexander in March 2008. On the second day of questioning, she admitted being at the house but said two intruders had killed him. Two years after her arrest, she withdrew that account and claimed she had acted in self-defense.

Deleted photographs recovered from a camera found in Alexander's washing machine placed Arias at the scene. The last picture of Alexander alive was taken at 5:29 p.m., and later frames showed him bleeding.

Arias was indicted on July 9, 2008, arrested on July 15 at her grandparents' home in Yreka, California, and extradited to Arizona on September 5, 2008. She pleaded not guilty on September 11, 2008.

The trial ran from January 2, 2013, to May 8, 2013, before Judge Sherry K. Stephens. After about 15 hours of deliberation, the jury found Arias guilty of first-degree murder and, on May 15, found the killing cruel, heinous or depraved. The first penalty-phase jury deadlocked 8 to 4 for death, and a mistrial was declared on May 23, 2013. A sentencing retrial from October 21, 2014, to February 12, 2015, also deadlocked, 11 to 1 for death, and a second mistrial was declared on March 5, 2015.

Judge Stephens sentenced Arias on April 13, 2015, to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Her appeal, filed in July 2018, argued that media coverage and prosecutorial misconduct had denied her a fair trial. In 2020, the Arizona Court of Appeals called the prosecutor's conduct egregious but upheld the conviction on the strength of the evidence. The Arizona Supreme Court declined to review the case in November 2020.
