Jennifer Pan pleaded guilty to manslaughter on March 18, 2026, for her part in the November 2010 shooting of her parents at the family home in Unionville, Markham, Ontario, after Canada's highest courts threw out her 2014 first-degree murder conviction. She was sentenced to life with earlier parole eligibility than the 25-year minimum imposed at her original trial.

On the night of November 8, 2010, Pan, then 24, unlocked the front door and signaled by phone to three armed men who entered the house. Her parents, Bich Ha Pan and Huei Hann Pan, were taken to the basement and shot. Her mother died, while her father was shot several times and permanently lost his sight. The gunmen took about $2,000 and left. Pan told police the attack had been aimed at her.

York Regional Police interviewed Pan that evening. Detective William Goetz, using the Reid technique, questioned her again on later dates and falsely told her that software could detect untruths in her account and that infrared satellite imagery had been examined. During the third interview, on November 22, 2010, she admitted hiring the men and was arrested. Pan was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder, alongside David Mylvaganam, Eric Shawn Carty, Daniel Chi-Kwong Wong and Lenford Roy Crawford.

The trial in Newmarket ran from March to December 2014. Pan, Mylvaganam, Wong and Crawford were sentenced to life with no parole for 25 years. Carty received 18 years and died in prison on April 26, 2018.

In May 2023, the Court of Appeal for Ontario vacated the first-degree murder convictions and ordered a retrial. The Supreme Court of Canada upheld that ruling 7 to 2 in April 2025. Rather than retry the case in full, the Crown accepted pleas to lesser charges in 2026. Wong pleaded guilty to manslaughter on February 2. Crawford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder on March 13, with a 15-year sentence treated as served, and Pan pleaded guilty to manslaughter on March 18. As of April 2026, Mylvaganam had not been retried.
