Jason Michael Mesich Questioned in Wife's Killing

Jason Michael Mesich, 48, was sentenced to 583 months, about 48.5 years, on March 15, 2021, for killing his wife, shooting two sisters next door and firing at a Bloomington, Minnesota, police officer.

Mesich pleaded guilty under a plea agreement on February 10, 2021, before Hennepin County District Court Judge Hilary Caligiuri to second-degree murder of Angela Mesich, 47, attempted second-degree murder of the 12-year-old girl, second-degree assault of her adult sister, and first-degree assault for shooting at the officer. He said he shot the neighbors because he thought they had heard him shoot his wife. The county attorney's office said he fired at the officer after being told to come out with his hands up, and a bullet struck a car outside. He had been charged on September 1, 2020, with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

The agreement called for consecutive terms of 367 months for murder, 180 months for attempted murder and 36 months for second-degree assault, totaling 583 months, plus a concurrent 134 months for first-degree assault. At his sentencing hearing, held by video, Mesich apologized, saying he was truly sorry for his actions that night and would live with it for the remainder of his life. He must serve at least two-thirds of the term before supervised release, at the earliest at about age 80.

The Mesiches lived on the 8300 block of 15th Avenue South in Bloomington. On the night of August 30, 2020, the family next door was loading a U-Haul trailer in front of their home. At about 11 p.m. that Sunday, Bloomington police responded to multiple reports of shots fired and possible shooting victims. Officers heard gunshots inside a home and found Angela Mesich dead in the detached garage, shot numerous times in the neck and upper torso. Mesich later admitted in court that he shot her 12 times there.

Next door, the neighbors' mother told officers a man walked up suddenly and began shooting at the family. The 12-year-old girl was shot in the head, and her adult sister, 29, was shot several times in the legs. The man also shot at and missed other family members, including the mother. The family drove the sisters to the hospital. Both survived; the girl remained in critical condition when the complaint was filed on September 1, 2020.

Officers entered the Mesich house looking for other victims and found only Jason Mesich, screaming, throwing items and discharging firearms in the basement. The Bloomington police chief said he fired as many as 40 shots from the basement and officers returned fire without hitting him. Officers negotiated from outside until he came out and surrendered. He was arrested early Monday, August 31. A search warrant at the house turned up numerous guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Two Bloomington detectives interviewed Mesich after his arrest, opening with his details and his rights. The charging complaint, sworn by a Bloomington police officer, summarized his post-Miranda statement. Mesich said he did not remember much but had "probably" killed his wife. He said they argued in the garage that Sunday night because he did not think they had sex often enough, and he "probably" went inside and got a gun. He said she was leaning against her car and swung at him, and he hit her in the collarbone area with both fists. He said he had a gun and "maybe" she said something like "just shoot me then." He said, "I'm assuming that I did shoot her," and "I probably emptied it." He said the neighbors were not good neighbors. Asked why the girl was shot, he said maybe it was the opportunity. He said he hated all children and possibly they had seen what happened to his wife.
