Jasmine Jones Questioned in Mikail Jones Shooting
A jury convicted Phazion Whyte of murder and felonious assault in early February 2024 in the shooting of Mikail Jones at a Forest Park, Ohio, gas station, after Jasmine Jones was questioned and later testified for the state. Mikail Jones, 27, lived in the Cincinnati area, ran a community boxing program and was a boxer with a 9-year-old daughter. On the night of May 6 into May 7, 2022, he was at the Showcase Bar and Grill with his brother, and his father came to pick him up. Jasmine Jones, 27, who was not related to him despite their shared surname, lived with her two children and her fiance, Whyte, 24. Whyte had pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in September 2018 in the 2017 death of Adrian Bufford and served 21 months. At Showcase, Mikail Jones's brother approached Jasmine Jones, and an argument moved outside. Security removed him, while she continued shouting at him and called Whyte on FaceTime, turning the camera toward the brother. The brother drove to a Shell station across the street, and she followed in her blue Jeep. Mikail Jones got out of his father's BMW and yelled at her before she left. Whyte then called and told her to come home. Whyte took the wheel at their house and drove to a friend's home. Both cars continued to the Cruise Inn Bar, where Mikail Jones had been drinking with his father and his father's girlfriend. Whyte walked toward the bar, returned and told Jasmine Jones to follow the other car. At the Speedway gas station at 625 Northland Boulevard, she parked at the business next door. Whyte pulled up his hood and walked toward the Speedway. Mikail Jones was shot at about 2:23 a.m. while sitting in the back seat of his father's BMW. His father was buying a soda inside and heard the gunfire as he came out. Whyte called Jasmine Jones to pick him up, told her to drive straight and calm, and threw the gun from the window as they drove through Winton Woods Park. The gun was never recovered. The next morning, they broke both of their phones and flew to Florida for ten days. Forest Park police secured Speedway camera footage, and within two days Detective Mike Robb had information from two sources naming Whyte. Cell site analysis placed both phones near the Speedway at the time of the shooting. Robb first questioned Jasmine Jones at her home on July 5, 2022, but she was not forthcoming. Forest Park detectives Robb and Jeff Carnine interviewed her again after her arrest in August 2022 at the Springdale Police Department. They told her she had already been indicted for murder and was facing life, and that Whyte had sat in the same seat about an hour earlier and was also under arrest. She denied involvement, said she was by the door when a stranger started something with her boyfriend, and shifted her account as detectives described the camera footage. The appellate record also described her as not forthcoming. She gave a full account in February 2023, when she and her attorney met Robb at the jail and she identified Whyte as the shooter from the Speedway video. A Hamilton County grand jury indicted both on August 17, 2022, on murder, felonious assault and receiving stolen property. Whyte was convicted of murder and felonious assault with gun specifications and sentenced in February 2024 to 18 years to life. The First District Court of Appeals affirmed on December 18, 2024, in State v. Whyte, No. C-240096. Jasmine Jones testified that she was charged with murder and felonious assault as an accomplice, was present but was not the shooter, and hoped for a lesser sentence in exchange for her testimony, although no promises had been made. What became of her own case is not established. No plea, verdict or sentence has been publicly reported, and she has not been shown to have been convicted of anything. The latest public record concerning her is that testimony in early 2024. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 106 minutes. It presents the interview itself and begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
