Janet Tyburski Questioned in Daughter Rachele Tyburski's Death
Janet Tyburski was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison after pleading guilty on April 5, 2017, in Elyria to murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse in the death of her daughter, Rachele Tyburski, 26. The plea agreement was reached with Lorain County prosecutors. She must serve at least 19 years before she is eligible for parole. Police said Rachele was likely killed in the early morning hours of March 13, 2015, at the Lakewood, Ohio, home she shared with her mother. Just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2015, a man found her body, partially clothed and face down, in a field off Victory Lane in North Ridgeville, Ohio, in Lorain County. Prosecutors said the body had been kept in the house for two days before it was left in the field. North Ridgeville police released a photo of her face the next day, hoping someone would recognize her, then identified her as Rachele Tyburski of Lakewood. Police later said her mother identified her. The Lorain County coroner said the body showed signs of blunt force trauma and that she was believed to have been suffocated. Janet Tyburski, reported as 45 when she was arrested in 2015, had raised three daughters by herself after her husband died in a car crash in August 1999. The family lived in Lakewood, a Cleveland suburb. Rachele's grandmother said Rachele had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and Janet was the primary caregiver for Rachele's 4-year-old son. Rachele's younger sister, Hannah Tyburski, was a student at Oberlin College. North Ridgeville police led the investigation. Police said interviews and surveillance video along Lorain Avenue led them to Janet Tyburski, and the Lorain County coroner credited video surveillance. She was arrested at her Lakewood home on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, and charged with killing her daughter. At her arraignment in Elyria Municipal Court, she pleaded not guilty, and the judge did not set a bond. Police said they were looking into whether someone had helped move the body. Janet Tyburski was later charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse, and was held on a $2 million bond. Hannah Tyburski, then 19, was charged with obstructing justice, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. She was arrested on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, and released on bond. Authorities said Janet Tyburski asked Hannah for help disposing of the body. No motive was given. Before her guilty plea, Janet Tyburski entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, and mental health experts for the prosecution found her competent to stand trial. In court she apologized and said she was not in her right mind when she put the body in the field. On April 10, 2017, Hannah Tyburski pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of gross abuse of a corpse and received probation.
