Israel Keyes FBI Interrogation in the Killing of Samantha Koenig
Israel Keyes, a suspected serial killer charged with abducting and killing Anchorage teenager Samantha Koenig, told FBI agents he had killed "less than a dozen" people before he died in an Alaska jail cell in 2012 without being tried or convicted. Keyes abducted Koenig, 18, from the Common Grounds coffee stand on Tudor Road in Anchorage on February 1, 2012, and took her to his pickup truck across the street. A federal indictment said he confined her and intentionally killed her early the next morning. Investigators determined she had been sexually assaulted and strangled in a shed in West Anchorage. Keyes took Koenig's debit card and PIN. On February 24, more than three weeks after her death, he used her cellphone to demand that ransom be deposited into the account linked to the card. Her family deposited money, and Keyes withdrew it from ATMs in several states. Koenig's body was recovered from Matanuska Lake in April 2012. Investigators tracked Keyes through the ATM withdrawals and arrested him in Lufkin, Texas, on March 13, 2012. A federal grand jury in Anchorage indicted him on April 18, 2012, on three counts: kidnapping resulting in the death of Samantha Koenig, receiving and possessing ransom money, and access device fraud. U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced the charges. The kidnapping count carried a maximum of life or death. During roughly two dozen sessions over seven months, beginning in April 2012, FBI agents and an Anchorage police detective questioned Keyes for dozens of hours. He described the Koenig killing and the killings of Bill and Lorraine Currier in detail, but withheld names, locations and jurisdictions that could have allowed other cases to be confirmed or charged. He said the killings were "entertainment for me" and described traveling far from home, avoiding a victim profile, never using the same area twice, and burying "kill caches" containing weapons, ammunition and zip ties around the country in advance. Bill and Lorraine Currier were abducted from their Essex, Vermont, home on June 8, 2011. Keyes told agents he cut the phone lines, entered their bedroom, bound Lorraine Currier, and bludgeoned and shot Bill Currier before using Drano on the bodies and putting them in garbage bags. Neither body was recovered. The FBI also believes Debra Feldman, 49, who was last seen at her Hackensack, New Jersey, home on April 8, 2009, was a victim. Her body has never been found. Keyes was found dead at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on December 2, 2012, three days after his last recorded interview, having strangled and cut himself. The federal case ended there. Guards found eleven drawings of skulls made in his own blood under his bed. Investigators take them to represent eleven victims, four of whom have been identified as Samantha Koenig, Bill and Lorraine Currier, and Debra Feldman. Seven remained unidentified as of March 13, 2021. The FBI has released photographs of recovered kill caches and a timeline of Keyes' movements while seeking public help to identify them. The video is an interview-room recording without narration or a presenter. It runs about 373 minutes and is posted in four parts. The FBI released five recorded interviews dated May 24, May 29, June 7, July 26 and November 29, 2012, and the uploader identifies this as the fourth, corresponding to the July 26 session.
