Florida Woman Gets Life in Custody Handoff Shooting
Amanda Marie Janzen was sentenced to life in prison after pleading nolo contendere and being adjudicated guilty of second-degree murder in a Christmas Day custody handoff shooting that killed Anna Haslup Terrill and wounded Thomas Lepread Williams in Gainesville, Florida. Janzen, 38 at the time, lived in Alachua, Florida, and shared an 11-month-old child with Williams. A December 20, 2023, court order gave them 50/50 custody of the infant and set a handoff for 2 p.m. on Christmas Day in the parking lot of a Walgreens at Northwest 13th Street and Northwest 39th Avenue. Williams was in a relationship with Terrill, who drove him to the exchange. Janzen arrived first on December 25, 2023, with five children in her vehicle. She retrieved a gun from the vehicle, approached Williams and Terrill's car with it behind her back, and shot Terrill three times, killing her. She then shot Williams three times as he tried to get away. Witnesses heard Janzen say, "You made this happen." Store surveillance video captured the shooting. Williams was taken to hospital and survived. A nearby Gainesville Police Department officer heard the shots and saw Janzen's vehicle leave. Gainesville police, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the Alachua Police Department pursued her about 13 miles north at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour. The five children remained in her car and were heard pleading with her to slow down. Janzen called police during the pursuit and said she had shot two people. She surrendered in a Taco Bell parking lot in Alachua. Officers recovered a discarded firearm and two loaded magazines. After being read her Miranda rights, Janzen told officers that police already knew what had happened because they had reviewed the surveillance video. The Gainesville Police Department was the investigating agency. The interview's date was not given, and the detectives were not named. Janzen was booked into the Alachua County Jail on December 26, 2023, initially with bail set at $2 million, and was later held without bond. Janzen was arrested on charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder and child neglect. On January 18, 2024, an Alachua County grand jury indicted her on first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, and five counts of child neglect. She was later also charged with spitting on a corrections worker while in custody. She was arraigned in February 2024, and jury selection had been scheduled for February 10, 2025. On April 28, 2025, Janzen entered a plea of nolo contendere to second-degree murder as a lesser included offense, attempted first-degree murder, fleeing, and five counts of child neglect. She was adjudicated guilty. Circuit Judge Denise Ferrero sentenced her to life in prison on the murder count, 30 years on the attempted murder count, 15 years for fleeing, and 5 years on each of the five child neglect counts. The court ordered no contact with the victim's family and no contact with her own children unless a licensed therapist recommends it and a court enters an order allowing it. No appeal has been publicly reported. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 117 minutes. It shows the post-arrest interview itself, without narration or a presenter.
