Florida Lawyer Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity

Beatrice Bijoux, a 31-year-old personal injury lawyer, was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to a Florida Department of Children and Families facility after driving into four people outside a Stuart market on February 22, 2022.

Bijoux practiced in Fort Lauderdale and had been admitted to The Florida Bar in 2016 after graduating from Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad College of Law. She grew up in Stuart, on Florida's Treasure Coast, and was living with her parents and brother at the family's home there in February 2022. She said she attended Jensen Beach High School and Florida International University and is Haitian American. Bijoux also said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in 2019, had been involuntarily committed under Florida's Baker Act four times, and had tried to kill herself in Texas in April 2021. Her brother had locked her handgun in a safe at the house.

At 12:59 p.m., Bijoux drove a Kia into four people outside The Fresh Market at 2300 SE Ocean Boulevard. Police said she was traveling about 30 to 35 miles per hour. She then reversed at high speed and accelerated toward a man who tried to stop her from leaving, according to The Florida Bar's emergency suspension case. He moved out of the way. Three people had minor injuries and remained at the scene, while the fourth was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. All injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Bijoux left before officers arrived.

Sergeant John Reddick of the Stuart Police Department located Bijoux and her vehicle. Store security video and witness accounts documented the crash. Later that day, a detective who introduced himself as George interviewed her at the Stuart police station. He read her the Miranda warning, which she signed.

During the several-hour interview, Bijoux said voices had been telling her to kill herself and other people. She described her diagnoses, earlier hospitalizations, family and address. She asked to be charged with four counts of attempted murder, one for each person hit, but later asked whether the charges could be dropped and said she was not in her right mental state when she requested them. The detective repeatedly told her that being charged was not the same as being convicted. The arrest report said she told officers that voices in her head had directed her to kill the people and that she intentionally wanted to kill them. It also recorded her saying she had thought about harming her four-year-old niece, who was not named.

Bijoux was charged on March 10, 2022, with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of high-speed or wanton fleeing. She pleaded not guilty. On March 21, 2022, the Florida Supreme Court granted The Florida Bar's petition for her emergency suspension. On October 14, 2022, a judge found her not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered her committed. She was never tried.

The Florida Supreme Court placed Bijoux on the Bar's inactive list for incapacity not related to misconduct on February 9, 2023. She remained a patient at Florida State Hospital until July 15, 2025. She petitioned for reinstatement to the Bar on November 3, 2025, and the Bar published notice on December 3, 2025. A report said the court adopted a referee's recommendation and dismissed the petition on June 11, 2026, ordering her to pay $2,034.48 in costs to the Bar. She has not been reinstated.

The video is a police interview-room recording presented in four parts and runs about 192 minutes in total. It shows the interview itself without narration or a presenter.
