Doug Heath Questioned in Tyerune G. Blocker Killing
An Alachua County jury found Douglas Cantrel Heath, then 38, guilty of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder on October 31, 2022, in the shooting that killed Tyerune G. Blocker in Brooker, Florida. The jury also found Martesha Johnson, then 32, guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and accessory after the fact. Circuit Judge William Davis presided over the trial. On January 11, 2023, Heath and Johnson were each sentenced to life in prison; one report said each received two life sentences. Florida has no parole. Jasmine Chantell Webb pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 years in prison with 599 days of credit for time served. No appellate ruling on Heath's convictions has been confirmed. Heath, called Doug Heath, was 36 in May 2021 and lived in Ocala, Marion County, Florida. In the recorded interview, he says he grew up in Marion County and graduated from North Marion High School. An account citing the arrest affidavit described him as the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Webb, then 32, and said he was also in a relationship with Johnson, then 30, a math teacher at Fort King Middle School in Ocala. Webb had previously been in a relationship with Derrick Williams. Local reporting described the case as a love triangle. At about 7:15 p.m. on May 17, 2021, Alachua County deputies were called to an abandoned residence in the 1300 block of NW 223rd Lane in Brooker. Blocker, 44, of Lake Butler, had been shot and killed. Williams was there and was not hurt. He told deputies that multiple gunshots were fired from a truck without provocation, and that he believed an earlier threatening voice message sent from Webb's phone came from Heath. According to trial reporting, Heath shot at Williams, missed, and hit Blocker, who had no part in the dispute. According to the account of the affidavit, surveillance video from a nearby business showed a pickup like the one Williams described, and Webb drove a black Nissan Titan with Heath in the passenger seat. A witness described a gray SUV following the pickup; Johnson owned a gray Kia Sorento. License plate readers placed both vehicles in Gainesville at times consistent with the shooting. Footage from a Sunoco in Reddick showed all three together about an hour before it. Heath and Johnson were booked into the Alachua County jail; Webb was arrested in Levy County. On May 20, 2021, Heath agreed to be taken to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office for an interview, where he said he was asleep at the time of the shooting and denied any involvement. The recording in this upload appears to be that interview. Two detectives question Heath, and one remarks on the long ride from Levy County. Heath says people were looking to kill him and his family, denies involvement and says he told them where he was. Near the end, he asks for a lawyer. The date of the recording is not stated on it.
