Dominique Houston Interviewed in Michael Farmer's Death
Dominique Houston was ordered to serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the April 25, 2021, crash that killed Michael Farmer and his dog in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Houston lived in Newnan, Georgia. Her age was reported as 38, though one early report gave 34. Farmer, 25, lived in Sandy Springs and had moved to the Atlanta area for an accounting job. He was a club rugby coach at Roswell High School and owned a Catahoula dog named Bruce. No reporting describes any relationship between Houston and Farmer. Just before 8 p.m., Houston was driving a white 2020 Chevrolet Malibu with a Florida tag east on Hammond Drive near Glenridge Drive when the car struck Farmer and Bruce as they walked on the road. Both died. Police said Houston had left another hit-and-run crash near Roswell Road and Interstate 285 minutes earlier. They said she did not stop after striking Farmer and Bruce and nearly struck another pedestrian while fleeing. Police later charged her with speeding at 68 mph in a 35 mph zone. Sandy Springs police identified the car from its description and the earlier crash. With help from the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, they located Houston, the car and another person in Newnan. Houston was arrested on April 28, 2021, on two counts of hit and run, first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving and following too closely. Investigators found Houston had been released from the Fulton County Jail. She was booked again on April 30 on additional warrants for speeding, two counts of failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, cruelty to animals and failure to use due care near a pedestrian. The recording is a Sandy Springs police interview; the video's narration dates it to April 26, 2021, two days before the reported arrest date. In it, Houston says she thought she had hit a dog. Detectives end the interview by telling her that charges, including the earlier rear-end hit and run, are coming and that she will be taken to the Fulton County Jail. Houston pleaded guilty to following too closely, homicide by vehicle in the first degree, hit and run resulting in serious injury or death, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, cruelty to animals, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to yield at a crosswalk, two counts of failure to obey signs or control devices, and speeding. Sandy Springs police said she was sentenced on September 19, 2022, to 15 years, with 10 years to serve in prison and 5 years on probation; another report gave the same split. A separate report gave 20 years, with 10 in prison and 10 on probation. All accounts agreed on 10 years in prison. No trial took place and no appeal has been reported.
