Danny Ray Beard II pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of Andrea Washington at her Jacksonville, Florida, home and was sentenced on July 7, 2023, to 30 years in Florida State Prison with a 25 year minimum mandatory term.

Washington, 38, was a United States Navy chief petty officer and the mother of three sons, who are not named in reporting. She lived on Itani Way on Jacksonville's Northside. Beard, reported as 37 when charged, was her former partner. The State Attorney's Office called him her ex-boyfriend, while some reporting described him as her ex-fiance. He was not her husband. They had lived together for about a year, and he moved out roughly two weeks before her death.

In the month before she was killed, Washington reported that Beard had kicked in a door at her home and threatened her with a gun. A judge granted her a temporary injunction for protection against him. A hearing was scheduled for the day after she was killed. Washington was found shot to death inside her home on September 17, 2018. The arrest warrant placed the shooting on the night of September 16, and three .25 caliber rounds were recovered near her body.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigated. According to the arrest warrant, ADT security data showed the front door opening and closing around the time Washington would have returned from work. Later door activity matched the times Beard's cellphone connected to and disconnected from the home's wireless network. Cellphone records, internet data and security system data placed Beard at the house during the window in which Washington was killed, contradicting his statement that he had been at his own home.

Investigators recovered a black Yankees cap at the scene matching one Beard wore in photographs. They found .25 caliber ammunition at his residence matching the rounds from the scene and more than 900 images from Washington's surveillance system on his phone. DNA testing on the recovered rounds produced a result reported as roughly 490,000 times more likely if Beard was one of three contributors.

During an interview with detectives before his arrest, Beard said he had been home that night and had not visited Washington's house since he was served with the injunction. He said Washington texted him for help, telling him that someone she identified only as T was following her. Beard said he and a friend drove to her house and found her dead. He denied owning a firearm and said he had not violated the injunction. A friend, Marlon Jones, told police Beard owned a handgun and that he had seen it recently.

Beard was arrested about three months after the killing and charged with second degree murder. He pleaded not guilty and wrote to judges maintaining his innocence, saying in one letter, "I did nothing wrong but I'm being accused of a crime I didn't do." He pleaded guilty under a negotiated agreement on June 21, 2023, though some outlets reported the plea a day later, on June 22, 2023. Judge Mark Borello gave him credit for the 4 years and 7 months he had already served. Beard apologized in court and asked Washington's family for forgiveness. Assistant State Attorneys Dan Skinner and Cameron French prosecuted the case. No appeal has been reported.
