Christopher William Shows received two life terms in Okeechobee County for the December 7, 2016, first-degree premeditated murder of Amanda Gayle Suarez and the armed burglary of her Okeechobee, Florida, home. Suarez, 25, was married, had four children and lived on NW 3rd Street. Her children were afterward raised by their father.

Shows, 21, was dating Suarez's cousin and was known to the family, which allowed him into the house as a visitor rather than forcing his way inside. According to the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office, Shows made sexual advances that Suarez refused, returned to his truck for a .22 rifle, chased her through the house and shot her once in the back of the head as she tried to leave through the back door. He then had sex with her body. A relative found Suarez in the kitchen, and one of her children, a 2-year-old, had been in the home.

Shows took Suarez's cell phone, which was later found covered in blood near the Okeechobee Missionary Baptist Church, and burned the clothes he had been wearing. Deputies recovered a photograph from the phone that showed Shows inside Suarez's home within about half an hour of the killing.

Deputies drove Shows in for questioning. After a deputy read him his rights, he agreed to talk, gave his age as 21 and said he worked overnight shifts. For a long stretch, he denied being at the house that day and said he had been home sleeping. Detectives then showed him the photograph and told him it placed him inside the house within half an hour of Suarez's death. Arrest records state that he confessed afterward. The undersheriff said Shows's stated reason was that he "wanted to know what murder was about." He was arrested in mid-December 2016, roughly 10 days after Suarez's body was found.

Shows was indicted in February 2017 on first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, armed burglary of an occupied dwelling with an assault or battery, abuse of a dead human body, attempted sexual battery, theft and tampering with evidence. State Attorney's Office prosecutor Ashley Albright filed notice that the state would seek the death penalty, citing that the killing occurred during a burglary and that it was "cold, calculated and premeditated." Defense attorney Stanley Glenn argued that the case did not meet the threshold for a capital prosecution.

The case did not end in a death sentence. Florida Department of Corrections records for inmate S81199, Christopher W Shows, list a July 9, 2021, sentencing date in Okeechobee County case 1600812. The records show four counts, all with an offense date of December 7, 2016: first-degree premeditated murder, life; armed burglary with a weapon, life; sexual abuse of a human corpse, 15 years; and obstructing a criminal investigation, 5 years. Local reporting at the time described the outcome as two life terms.

Shows entered state custody on July 28, 2021. He is held at Calhoun Correctional Institution, and his release date is listed as sentenced to life.
