Casey Marie Anthony was acquitted of first-degree murder on July 5, 2011, in the death of her two-year-old daughter Caylee Marie Anthony in Orlando, Florida, but was convicted of four counts of giving false information to police. Caylee's skeletal remains had been found in woods near the family home on December 11, 2008.

Caylee was last seen on June 16, 2008, when she left her grandparents' home with her mother. She was not reported missing until July 15, 2008, 31 days later, when her grandmother Cindy Anthony called 911. Casey, then 22, told detectives that a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez had taken the child on June 9. Investigators found no such nanny and no such apartment.

On July 16, 2008, detectives took Casey to Universal Studios, where she had said she worked. She admitted there that she no longer had a job at the park. She was arrested the same day and charged with making false statements, child neglect and obstruction.

A grand jury indicted her on October 14, 2008, for first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child. Jury selection began on May 9, 2011, in Pinellas County, and the six-week trial opened on May 24, 2011, before Judge Belvin Perry with a sequestered jury. Prosecutors argued the child had been killed with chloroform and duct tape. The defense said she had drowned accidentally.

On July 7, 2011, Anthony was sentenced to one year in county jail on each of the four false-information counts, to run consecutively, with a $1,000 fine on each and $217,000 in restitution to the state. With credit for time served since October 2008, she was released on July 17, 2011.

In 2013, a Florida appeals court overturned two of the four convictions on double-jeopardy grounds and upheld the other two.
