Brian Lee Golsby Questioned in Reagan Tokes Killing
Brian Lee Golsby was convicted on all nine counts in the abduction, rape and killing of 21-year-old Ohio State University senior Reagan Tokes and was sentenced in Columbus to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Tokes, who worked at the Bodega restaurant in Columbus, was abducted at gunpoint as she left work on the night of February 8, 2017. Prosecutors said she was forced into her car and made to withdraw cash from Chase Bank ATMs. She was taken to Scioto Grove Metro Park in Grove City, where she was raped and shot twice in the head. Her body was found the next morning. Grove City police linked Golsby to the crime through DNA from the rape kit and GPS data from his ankle monitor, which placed him at the scene around the time of the killing. Burn marks were found on Tokes's car, and Golsby admitted buying a gas can and trying to set the car on fire. Golsby was arrested and questioned by Grove City detectives on the morning of February 11, 2017. The interview lasted about six hours and was played for the jury at trial. Golsby admitted getting into the car without permission, forcing the cash withdrawals and leaving Tokes naked at the park. He denied shooting her and initially denied having a gun. He later blamed another man he called T.J., saying T.J. forced him through the abduction and rape and shot Tokes. Investigators found no evidence that T.J. existed, and three witnesses testified that Golsby had said he had a gun on February 8. Detective Richard Forney led the investigation. Golsby had served a six-year prison sentence for robbery and attempted rape before his release in November 2016. He was under GPS monitoring and wore an ankle bracelet. In the weeks before the killing, he also committed a series of armed robberies in Columbus, which he later admitted in court. His trial began in March 2018. The jury found him guilty of all nine counts, including aggravated murder, kidnapping, rape, aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence. Jurors deliberated for about seven hours over two days on punishment and did not return a death verdict, instead recommending life without parole. On March 21, 2018, Judge Mark Serrott imposed life in prison without the possibility of parole, reported as three consecutive life terms without parole. On April 3, 2018, Golsby pleaded guilty to six counts of aggravated robbery and received 66 years, consecutive to the life terms. The judge said the sentence added no prison time. Prosecutors appealed the penalty phase, and the Ohio Supreme Court agreed to review the case. The final outcome of that appeal could not be confirmed. The Reagan Tokes Act, signed in December 2018, changed sentencing rules for serious felonies and increased oversight of released offenders. The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 114 minutes. It presents the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
