Bree Kristen Kuhn was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting her husband, Collin James Turner, at their Gulf Breeze, Florida, home on September 8, 2021.

Kuhn, a U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola, was 34 at the time of the shooting and 37 at trial. Turner, 34, though reported as 33 in some accounts, was a retired U.S. Marine with 14 years of service, a stay-at-home father and an electrical engineering student. He was 100% disabled because of a traumatic brain injury. They lived with their two young children and Kuhn's older child from a prior relationship.

The couple had argued throughout the day about the children. Turner wanted to take them out of state, but Kuhn opposed the plan. At 12:53 p.m., Kuhn called 911 about a heated argument. Deputies found no evidence of a physical altercation and left the home in the 6100 block of Jenks Drive, near Midway. Turner called around 5 p.m. about another argument, but responding deputies found nothing alarming and again left.

At 6:22 p.m., Turner called 911 and said Kuhn had locked him in the garage and tried to break his arm as he attempted to re-enter the house. Gunshots were heard during the call. Turner said, "She just shot me!" Three more shots followed, then silence. Deputies arrived about four minutes later and found him dead in the garage from four gunshot wounds, all entering through his back. The three children were inside the house.

Kuhn, who appeared to be in shock, told deputies, "I shot him... I just shot my husband," and later said, "I'm a murderer. You should arrest me." She was arrested that evening and booked without bond. Kuhn claimed self-defense, saying Turner had kicked her foot and that she feared for herself and the children. She also alleged a history of abuse by Turner, citing his TBI and disability. The account detailed no extensive premeditation, staging or post-act tampering beyond locking Turner in the garage and shooting him during the 911 call.

Evidence included the 911 recordings, bodycam video from the two earlier deputy responses and the arrest, texts exchanged that day, medical examiner testimony and witness statements. Kuhn's brother had heard parts of the argument by phone. Prosecutors emphasized that there was no documented prior abuse and argued Turner posed no imminent threat while locked in the garage and speaking with 911. The defense planned to call a psychologist in support of a battered-spouse-syndrome defense, but did not after Kuhn decided not to testify.

A Santa Rosa County grand jury indicted Kuhn in October 2021. Her trial in Santa Rosa County Circuit Court in Milton lasted four days in September 2024 and was briefly delayed by Hurricane Helene. The jury deliberated a little more than four hours before finding her guilty on September 27, 2024. After victim-impact statements from Turner's parents, Circuit Judge James Duncan imposed the mandatory sentence the same day. The death penalty was not pursued.

Kuhn filed a notice of appeal with the First District Court of Appeal, acknowledged in October 2024, seeking review of voir dire, the trial proceedings, judgment and sentence. As of mid-2025 reporting, she was serving her sentence at Lowell Correctional Institution Annex in the Ocala/Gainesville area of Florida. There were no other defendants.
