Ashley Diane Hoath Questioned in Barron Killing

Ashley Diane Hoath, 27, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 25 to 40 years for the 2017 shooting death of Jeremy Alan Barron, 37, in Michigan.

Hoath lived in Hillsdale, Michigan. Barron, of Camden, Michigan, had dated her on and off, and the Michigan Court of Appeals described her as a woman who dated him at various times. They were not married. At her plea hearing, Hoath said Barron had abused her physically, sexually, emotionally and mentally, and that her children were removed because of the domestic violence. She said she met Jay Scott Clark, 40, of Bryan, Ohio, in a bar in November 2016. Barron was in jail on a criminal sexual conduct charge involving someone other than Hoath and was bailed out before his death.

Barron was shot to death on February 8, 2017. Hoath told the court that Barron had lost his phone and Clark offered to drive him to look for it, though they did not intend to find it. Clark drove a Chevrolet Tahoe, with Hoath in the front passenger seat and Barron in the back. Hoath said Clark said "get her done" and she answered "yeah, get 'er done," before Clark turned and shot Barron four times. The medical examiner found that Barron had been shot five times. His body was found on April 2, 2017, in a field off Dimmers Road in Camden Township by Amish children riding horses, about eight weeks after the shooting.

Authorities arrested Hoath and Clark after an investigation. During the recorded interview, Hoath was questioned about her knowledge of the killing. Court records state that she underwent about four hours of questioning before a polygraph test and then took the test. The detective told her she had "failed miserably," and she acknowledged planning the death during the discussion that followed. Clark confessed to police that he shot Barron with a .45 caliber revolver.

Hoath later tried to suppress her confession, testifying that she had denied involvement many times and agreed only to end the questioning. The trial court denied the motion, finding the detective's account more accurate. Hoath was charged with open murder and conspiracy to commit murder. On October 31, 2017, she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The other charges were dismissed under the plea agreement, and she agreed to testify against Clark.

A jury convicted Clark of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm on January 12, 2018. He was sentenced in early February 2018 to life without parole plus two years on the firearm count. The Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed on November 19, 2019. Hoath refused to testify at Clark's trial and tried to withdraw her plea. She was sentenced in January 2018, and her motion to withdraw the plea was denied. Michigan appellate courts denied leave to appeal in 2018, and a federal judge denied her habeas corpus petition on September 12, 2022.

The approximately 89-minute video shows the police interview-room recording itself. It begins with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved before presenting the interview.
