Antoine Phillips Questioned in Fulton's Death

Antoine Phillips was convicted of murder and kidnapping and sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years in the 2021 death of Jamie Fulton, who prosecutors said he beat unconscious and dragged into traffic in Blendon Township, immediately north of Columbus, Ohio.

Fulton, 35, and Phillips were in a relationship. Phillips was 32 in 2021. They were together late on the night of May 18, 2021, on Westerville Road near Morse Road. At the time of Fulton's death, Phillips was out on bond in a separate 2018 case in which he was charged with rape and gross sexual imposition. Those charges were pending, and the disposition of that case was not reported.

The couple argued and fought while walking in the 4300 block of Westerville Road. Prosecutors said Phillips beat Fulton unconscious, dragged her motionless body into a travel lane and walked away. Black and white surveillance video from a nearby business showed Fulton lying in the lane as vehicles passed. The first of multiple vehicles struck her about 45 seconds after Phillips left, and she was run over by at least six vehicles. Drivers who hit her called 911. Fulton died at the scene, and her death was ruled a homicide.

The surveillance footage became the core of the case. The judge who later presided over the trial called what it showed one of the most callous things he had seen on video. A warrant charged Phillips with murder and kidnapping. U.S. Marshals took him into custody in southeast Columbus on June 1, 2021, two weeks after Fulton was killed. Franklin County sheriff's deputies and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation mobile crime scene unit executed a search warrant that day.

During the detective interview after his arrest, Phillips is walked through the surveillance video and denies what it shows. He says the arm movement is him pulling Fulton back rather than punching her, that his hand was broken and that he was trying to get his bag. He also says Fulton was in the street trying to kill herself while he waved cars away. Told the video shows her running and screaming for help while he follows, he denies that too. The detective notes that Fulton does not move while cars pass, tells Phillips he is not in trouble for domestic violence but for murder, and asks whether twelve jurors would accept his account against the video.

Phillips was charged with murder, kidnapping and domestic violence. His first trial ended in a mistrial in March 2023 after an error by the prosecution. On March 22, 2023, Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Michael Holbrook ordered him held without bond pending retrial. Phillips told the court he would not stand before the judge and take responsibility for the death of someone he loved. At the retrial, a jury convicted him on August 18, 2023, of murder and kidnapping and found him not guilty of domestic violence, a count that turned on a dispute over whether he and Fulton had lived together.

On September 5, 2023, Holbrook sentenced Phillips, then 34, to life in prison with parole eligibility after 15 years. No appellate decision in the case has been publicly reported.

The video is a police interview-room recording that runs about 87 minutes. It presents the interview itself and opens with a short narrated introduction naming the people involved.
