OK, this is probably a dumb question but I have to ask. In some photos, especially in the earlier ones, why do they pack the nose (and sometimes mouth even) with what looks like tissues or tissue paper? Prevent bodily gases from escaping? I don't know, like I said, I ain't real bright ...
It's to reform the nose after death in addition to keeping it from collapsing. It becomes a very soft piece of cartilage and can be smushed out of shape very easily by a body bag or after lying face down/trauma. If anything, the process mainly serves as a way to make the deceased more recognizable to family and friends.
