Petal Marks from Shotgun Wadding Around Entrance Wounds
At close range, when there is only a single large wound of entrance, the wad from a shotgun shell can be found inside the body. If the shell contained a plastic wad or plastic shot cup, as the wad enters the body, the individual arms or "petals" that have peeled back in flight may produce a patterned abrasion around the wound of entrance. These petal marks can occur even if the entrance site is covered with clothing. The term “wad” refers to a component of a shotgun shell that is used to separate the shot from the powder, contain the shotgun shot, and provide a seal that prevents gas from blowing through the shot rather than propelling the shot out of the shotgun. May also fire a single projectile called shotgun slug. Fig.1 Shotgun wadding petal marks on the skin around an entrance wound. In this case, the plastic wadding had very firm petals, thus causing very well-defined abrasions. Re: Petal Marks from Shotgun Wadding Around Entrance Wounds
Took a 16ga. number 6 shot point-blank to the right chest in '98. The wadding and shot cup ended up under my shoulder blade. Lost the upper lobe of the right lung, 7lbs of muscle, and three ribs. Not fun but not brutally painful either, well afterward hurt like a bitch but during I guess the adrenoline was doing its job.
