A video made at the Forensic Medical Institute (IML) of Rio de Janeiro recorded an opossum walking on top of the body of a dead man, in one of the rooms of the public agency. The image also shows the animal eating part of the body that should be preserved in place.

In a statement, the Civil Police regretted what happened. The corporation said it is taking action so that situations like this do not happen again.

"The institution has opened an inquiry to investigate the circumstances in which the animal accessed that environment. The corpse had already been necropsied and there was no prejudice to the preparation of the report. It is worth reinforcing that all bodies that enter the Forensic Medical Institute are treated with respect and that this video does not represent the reality of the site, dealing with an exceptional, unpredictable situation", said the Civil Police in a statement.
