Open-Casket Farewell Peter Giele
On the 16th of june 1999, Dutch artist/poet/designer/architect Peter Giele died from a cerebral hemorrhage. He had a pretty bizarre Open-Casket farewell on the canals in Amsterdam. The flames on the boat in front of Peter's boat were a symbol for his life-motto 'ab igne ignem capere' which means 'To catch fire'. The crowbar was a symbol for Peters urge to build and demolish. The media coverage was pretty big in the Netherlands. On the same day they buried him, his famous club RoXY burnt down to the ground because people started fireworks inside while the airconditioning was working. Even Peters tombstone isn't standard. Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout made an artwork called the 'Gieleskull'. You can actually lay down in this work and contemplate death.   |

In which country? The Dutch funerals I have been to were pretty sober & modest. I would prefer funerals to be more like a celebration of someones life though. |
