Murder of a Couple Shot to Death with a Slug (1999, Korea)
This is a horrific murder case that occurred on a mountain road in Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, South Korea on January 19, 1999. The murderers are Jeong Hyeong-gu (born 1963) and Han Jun-hee (born 1966). Jeong Hyeong-gu, who shot the couple, was running a bar. His accomplice, Han Jun-hee, was an employee at the bar run by Jeong Hyeong-gu. The murderer Jeong Hyeong-gu went pheasant hunting that day. He had a legally registered shotgun, and Han Jun-hee, an employee at the bar, accompanied him on the hunt. The two were on their way home after hunting and were driving slowly. The victim couple, who were behind him, sped up and drove in front of the murderers, and this small thing was the cause of the terrible tragedy. The dirt road, not the asphalt, caused the murderers' car to be covered in dust, and the murderer Jeong Hyeong-gu became enraged because of this. Han Jun-hee and Jeong Hyeong-gu opened the window and shouted at the victim couple, cursing them out loud. The victim couple also shouted at the killers, cursing them out loud. The fight on the dirt road continued for about 5 minutes, about 1km away. Inside the car the criminals were driving was a loaded shotgun, an Italian-made Benelli shotgun loaded with 12-gauge slugs. The killers stopped the car and shot the back of the victim couple’s car, and the slug shot hit the back of the head of the driver, Mr. Kim. The couple’s car lost speed, and the killers went in front of the victims’ car and fired two more shots at the windshield of the sedan, broke the driver’s window with a rock, and dragged the two victims out. The killers had already decided to kill them. they shot the victim’s husband in the back of the head while he was in a coma. The victim’s wife, who saw her husband being murdered, got angry and ran towards the killers. The killers kicked and pushed the victim’s wife away, shot her in the stomach as she tried to get up, and finally shot her in the jaw. The killers shot the victim’s couple’s bodies several times. At that time, a truck was approaching the murder scene. The driver of the vehicle was Mr. A, who was a supervisor at a nearby road construction site. He was the only witness to the murders. As Mr. A approached the horrific murder scene, the killers fired four shots at Mr. A’s car. One of the shots grazed the back of his head. Mr. A stepped on the accelerator pedal and escaped the scene bleeding, barely managing to survive but suffered multiple shrapnel wounds to his scalp requiring two weeks of treatment. The killers dreamed of covering up the crime. In an attempt to make it look like a robbery, he took an Olympus camera, a bag containing women's cosmetics, and 800,000 won (approximately $750) in cash from the victims' sedans. After committing the horrific murders, the killer ran a bar and hired 7-8 additional employees to make the business prosperous. The Korean police focused on the investigation for 6 months and were finally able to arrest the murderers. The owner of the bar who fired the gun, Jeong Hyeong-gu, was sentenced to death, and the bar employee, Han Jun-hee, was sentenced to 5 years in prison. The bar employee, Han Jun-hee, was released in 2005, and the bar owner, Jeong Hyeong-gu, who was sentenced to death, is still in prison as of 2025. |

Re: Murder of a Couple Shot to Death with a Slug (1999, Korea)
News reports at the time stated that the killer loaded a slug just before the murder, which would not have been used for pheasant hunting. This murder led to a ban on the sale of slug ammunition in South Korea |
