When I became an EMT in 1992, stretchers were rated for 400 pounds and we loaded them in and out of the ambulance entirely by hand. When I left EMS in in 2008, they were rated for 600 pounds but we were still loading by hand. Now they're rated to 700-800 pounds and most services have begun using powered stretchers that lift patients using hydraulics. Many larger EMS services now even have a few specially designed bariatric ambulances designed to accommodate patients too big to fit in a standard ambulance. They come with ramps and winching systems and can often accommodate patients 900-1000 pounds. |

Yes... those will save you Big Time! I have two: One is electronic and mounted to the ceiling. The other is a portable lifter with a hand pump. Those mounted ceiling lifts are BOSS  |
