Lisa McPherson was a member of the Church Scientology in Clearwater Florida, whose death still stirs controversy questioning whether the church might have been some way responsible. On 18 November, 1995, thirty-six year old McPherson was involved in minor traffic accident in Clearwater. When rescue personnel arrived on the scene, it didn’t appear as if any either vehicles occupants required serious medical attention. But when McPherson began removing all of her clothes and began acting in a bizarre fashion, paramedics drove her to a nearby hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Shortly afterward, a handful of Scientology members arrived at the same hospital, to pick up Lisa McPherson. To hospital staff, McPherson appeared at first reluctant to leave with the church members, but after much persuasion, and in spite of a staff psychiatrist’s insistence that she remain for further mental observation, the group was able to convince her to check herself out. The last the Scientologists said to the hospital staff received was that McPherson would get the best of attention.

Following that incident, the Church of Scientology put Lisa McPherson up in a hotel for approximately seventeen days, where, during this time, her health spiraled rapidly. Then on 5 December, 1995, church members rushed a comatose McPherson to another yet more distant Florida hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead shortly after her arrival. From McPherson’s autopsy report, her body was severely dehydrated, with minor bruises on her arms and neck, and possible insect bites on her wrist and hands. The conclusion reached by the medical examiner, however, is that Ms. McPherson’s death was due to a pulmonary embolism. However, much speculation surrounded the case, of whether or not the Church of Scientology might have contributed in McPherson’s demise, due to their apparent neglect to acquire proper medical attention for her.

Although, initially, the state of Florida filed criminal charges against the Church of Scientology, they were later dropped.
