~ The autopsy shows that the individual had previous neck surgery to repair neck vertebrae damage or neck pain. I don't think the foam insert is standard procedure for a Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion (ACDF). ~ The foam support is used outside the neck area during recovery, not in the inside of the neck next to the throat passage. Too bad, since the ACDF looked pretty solid. The foam inside the neck is a rookie mistake. The orthopedic surgeon probably did his work and left residents to close up. Someone didn't notice the "for external use only" wrapping on the foam. Surgical staff looks for a "looks good to me" placement for the foam. Everyone is feeling good about the procedure until... |
