Dr. Frederick Gordon Brown, a surgeon for the City of London Police, arrived at Mitre Square at approximately 2:00 a.m. to examine the body. He observed that the victim was lying on her back with her head turned toward the left shoulder. Her arms rested alongside her body, her left leg was extended, and her right leg was bent. Her clothing had been disturbed enough to expose the abdomen, and it was immediately apparent that she had suffered extensive injuries to both the throat and abdominal area.

Brown noted that portions of the intestines had been removed from the abdominal cavity and placed around the body. Approximately two feet of intestine had been completely separated and positioned between the victim’s body and left arm. Part of the right ear had also been cut.

A considerable amount of clotted blood was present near the left side of the neck, shoulder, and upper arm. Brown found that the body was still warm and that rigor mortis had not yet begun. Based on these observations, he estimated that the victim had probably been dead for less than thirty minutes when he examined her at the scene. At first, he found no obvious signs of a struggle or significant external bruising.

The body was later transported to the mortuary at Golden Lane. While the victim’s clothing was being removed, a severed portion of her ear fell from the garments. Brown conducted a formal post-mortem examination at approximately 2:30 p.m. that Sunday. By then, rigor mortis was clearly present and the body had begun to show early signs of decomposition.

After cleaning the victim’s left hand, Brown discovered a small, recent bruise between the thumb and index finger. Several older bruises were also visible on the right shin, but there were no significant injuries to the scalp, back, or elbows.

The victim’s face had been severely mutilated. Both eyelids had suffered cuts, and several deep incisions crossed the nose and cheeks. One wound ran across the bridge of the nose and extended into the cheek, cutting deeply enough to reach the bone. The tip of the nose had been almost completely separated, and another incision continued through the upper lip and gum. Additional cuts had created loose triangular sections of skin on both cheeks.

Brown found a large wound extending across the throat. The incision had severed major structures on the left side of the neck, including important blood vessels, and continued deeply toward the spinal column. The larynx had also been cut. Based on the damage to the left common carotid artery, Brown concluded that massive blood loss from this vessel was the immediate cause of death.

In Brown’s opinion, the fatal throat wound was inflicted first. He believed the victim was already lying on the ground when her throat was cut and that death occurred almost immediately. He further concluded that the extensive mutilations to the face and abdomen were carried out after death because there was relatively little bleeding from many of those wounds.

The abdomen had been opened by a long series of incisions extending downward from the lower portion of the chest. Several wounds had also been made to the liver, and additional cuts continued through the lower abdominal and pelvic regions. Brown believed the person responsible had been positioned on the right side of the body while carrying out much of the mutilation.

The internal examination revealed extensive damage to several organs. Portions of the intestines had been separated from their normal attachments, and approximately two feet of the colon had been removed. The pancreas and spleen had also been injured.

Most significantly, the victim’s left kidney had been deliberately removed. Brown observed that the organ appeared to have been taken out with considerable precision. The uterus had also been cut, with most of it removed while portions of the surrounding reproductive structures remained intact. Other organs, including the bladder, appeared relatively undamaged.

The stomach contained very little food or liquid, although some partially digested food was present. Brown found no evidence suggesting recent sexual activity.

From the nature and placement of the wounds, Brown believed the killer had used a sharp, pointed knife. He estimated that the blade used on the abdomen was at least six inches long. He also believed the removal of the kidney demonstrated significant familiarity with human anatomy because the offender appeared to know both the organ’s location and how to remove it.

Brown estimated that the mutilations would have required at least several minutes to complete. The precision of some of the smaller facial injuries suggested to him that the killer had enough time to work deliberately rather than acting entirely at random or in haste.

He found no convincing evidence that the victim had struggled with her attacker and believed a single person was responsible. Because the throat wound would have caused death almost immediately, Brown also believed the victim would have been unable to cry out after the attack began. He stated unequivocally that the injuries could not have been self-inflicted.

Brown was also asked to examine a section of the victim’s apron that had reportedly been discovered in Goulston Street. He found that the recovered piece matched the remaining apron when the seams were compared. Blood and material that appeared to be fecal matter were present on the recovered section. Brown could not determine with certainty whether the blood on the fabric was human.
