Re: Autopsy of an Organ Donor
Well, I guess I know now what my mom may have looked like when the organ procurement group harvested some of her long bones and connective tissue. I guess I didn't think it would look so filleted, but I suppose they don't have to take too much care. For my mom, she had a viewing even after harvest, and she looked fine. She would have been happy to know that I went with her wishes to donate everything I could from her body.

Re: Autopsy of an Organ Donor
Nope, that's his scalp. Standard procedure during an autopsy. The front half of the scalp gets pulled over the face, the back half peeled back to the neck. Then they saw through the skull and pry the skull cap back to have access to the brain. When they sew people back up, it is hard to tell if they've been harvested or had an autopsy. A friend of mine died last month, and they did an autopsy to determine how she died. I was too sick to make the trip for the viewing, but from what I'm told she looked fine...extra makeup to hide the pale color of the skin, but looked peaceful. I didn't know the organ people cut the body up so much...down to the ankles, damn! |

Re: Autopsy of an Organ Donor
A lot of this is done with any autopsy, they just sew you up before the funeral. My best friend died at age 15 from being in a car that was hit by a drunk driver. Didn't leave a bruise on her body but her brain stem was severed and her family donated her organs. That was the only good thing to come of it I guess. At the funeral she looked like she could just get up and jump out of the coffin. I've been to some funerals where the person looks unnatural, but the funeral home did a really good job with my friend. She just looked like she was asleep. So don't let this deter you from donating organs. They're useless to you after you die anyway and it's not like you'd feel it or anything. No use to leave them rotting inside you in a casket when they could help someone.
