Yugoslav War Footage - Slovenia and Croatia 1991
This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of Croatian and Slovenian independence from Yugoslavia (June 25th 1991). It also marked the genesis to what would become the most violent war Europe had seen since the conclusion of the Second World War, claiming an estimated 140,000 lives. The resulting war in Slovenia only lasted ten days. It was the second of the Yugoslav Wars to start in 1991, following the Croatian War of Independence which would last until 12th November 1995, and would leave an estimated 22,000 people dead. The Ten-Day War, or the Slovenian War of Independence, was a brief conflict that followed Slovenia's declaration of independence on 25th June 1991. It was fought between the Slovenian Territorial Defence (TOS) and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). It lasted from 27 June 1991 until 7 July 1991, when the Brioni Accords were signed. This combat footage is taken from Australian news media (Channel 7) at the time. It was part of a one hour television compilation of significant events that shaped the year 1991. I have converted it directly from VHS format to digital and decided to share it as it may be of interest to some of you. |

Apparently, the full Chechclear video aired on TV there once. Someone must have been recording it, buried in a stack of VHS tapes in the corner of a storage locker, or something. They wouldn't even know everyone was looking for it. |

Re: Yugoslav War Footage - Slovenia and Croatia 1991
The soldier was actually checking for landmines. Slovenian territorial militia laid plenty on the roadways, in blockades behind stalled vehicles, as well as in the adjacent forests. Many Yugoslav era landmines were cased in plastic and not steel; increasing the difficulty posed for combat engineers, as well as mine clearance teams from across the globe after the wars ended in the region. It will take many decades to properly clear. |

I found an HD version of the Chechclear beheading and thought I'd tuck it right in here...
